October 21 1901

Emily Gertrude Sturgess commenced teaching as Monitress of Babies' Class. (Editor's note: she would be aged about 16)

 

November 12 1901

Owing to the inclement weather E. M. Lindop was absent from duties. (Editor's note: she would be aged about 17.)

 

November 22 1901

Maud E Lindop is absent today on leave preparing for Scholarship Examinsation.

 

November 29 1901

Gertrude Sturgess is absent from duties owing to sickness in the family.  Maud E. Lindop has given one month's notice.  She has terminated her apprenticeship.

 

December 6 1901

Mabel Baker is absent from school owing to sickness in the family. (Editor's note: she would be aged about 15, the eldest of 7 children; her youngest brother was under one year old.)

 

December 9 1901

Mabel Baker is still absent.  They have diptheria in the family.  Maud E. Lindop is attending the King's Scholarship Examinations.

 

December 20 1901

G. Sturgess and M. Baker are still absent owing to sickness in their respective families.  School closed for the Christmas Holiday.  E. M. Lindop left the school today.

 

January 6 1902

School re-opened after the Christmas Holiday.  Number present 54.  Mabel Baker is still absent owing to diptheria in her home.  Ethel Maud Parker has commenced teaching in the place of E. M. Lindop. (Editor's note - Evelyn Maud Lindop married Frederick Aston, the village baker, on 2nd October 1919.)

Mabel Baker has returned to her duties, the period for exemption on account of diptheria having terminated.

Today the school is closed for the Easter Holidays.  It is intended to re-open school on Monday April 7.  Ethel Parker has been absent all week owing to her mother's illness.

Ethel Parker and Mabel Baker have left the school.

 

April 14 1902

Mabel Baker resumed her duties in school.

Elsie Annie Stevens commenced to teach as Monitress in the Infant Class.  (Editor's note: she would have been aged about 13 and lived at The Peel Arms with her parent's.  John Hughes the Innkeeper was her grandfather.)

Mabel Parker is leaving school today.  She was Monitress Class II Infants.

Extract from Inspection Report

School inspected without notice.  88 children present out of 108 on the books.  A girl 13 years of age is not a suitable teacher for a class of 37 very young children.

Extract from Inspection Report

The P.T., whose indentures have not yet been signed, is at present working for the School for more than 20 hours per week and Elsie Stevens who is stated to be wither a probationer or candidate for not less than 20 hours.  The staff should be strengthened so that this may not be necessary.

The teachers are absent this afternoon.  They are being confirmed at Lichfield.

The staff consists largely of young and inexperienced teachers and special care is needed to see that good methods are used and that the teachers are well supervised.

Elsie Annie Stevens has failed to pass the Government Examination for admission to Pupil Teachership.

 

September 20 1905

This morning my teachers, Elsie Annie Stevens and Helen Ada Wilson commenced at the Lichfield Girls' High School Centre for Pupil Teachers.  Alice M. Wilson has this week applied for permission to sit at the next Kings' Scholarship Examinations.

 

October 31 1905

A M. Wilson is recognised as a Provisional Assistant Teacher until she qualifies at the next King's Scholarship Examinations.

 

November 2 1905

A. M. Wilson is absent today.  She is sick.

 

November 6 1905

A. M. Wilson and Elsie Annie Stevens are both absent on account of illness.

A Medical Certificate for Elsie Annie Stevens has been forwarded to the Vicar.

 

December 11 1905

Alice M Wilson is absent this week attending King's Scholarship Examinations at Birmingham Rea St Council School.

 

January 12 1906

Elsie Annie Stevens has resumed her duties.  Although the Pupil Teacher Centre at Lichfield does not re-open until the 17th, the Probationers only attend school half-time.

 

February 1 1906

In consequence of renewed illness Elsie Annie Stevens is unable to continue her work as a Probationer in the Infants' Department and severs her connection with the school from today.

 

February 12 1906

Pupil Teachers and Probationers are required to attend the Elementary School for 2½ days per week only.  They must not be required to attend the Elementary School during any portion of the day or half-days when they are due to attend the Centre.  During holidays, occasional or otherwise, at the Centre, they must not be required to attend the Elementary School for more than the 2½ days per week.

 

May 26 1906

Helen Ada Wilson attended at Croft St Council School, Walsall, for Examination as a Candidate on Probation.

 

June 20 1906

Helen Ada Wilson has passed the Examination for Candidates held at Croft St Council School, Walsall, on May 26.

 

September 3 1906

1.  The Education Committee have consented to the application of the Managers of Stowe Street School, Lichfield, for permission to accept Helen Ada Wilson as a Probationer.  The exact day of leaving as reported to the Board of Education is August 31 1906.

2.  Miss Alice Watson, late uncertificated Teacher in Shobnall Road Council School, Burton on Trent, begins work in this Department today as uncertificated assistance.
