Thomas Bates (a farmer farming the Green
Farm, Main Street) was elected Vice- Chairman of Whittington’s first Parish
Council. 1897 elected Chairman, defeating Samuel Seckham of the Old Hall.
Chairman till March 1899 and then elected again April 16 1903.

November 1921 – Parish Council Minutes
On the motion of the Chairman a vote of
condolence was ordered to be sent to Mrs Bates on the death of Mr Bates who
had been a member of the Council since its inception something like 26
years. His gravestone gives the date of death as October 19 1921, aged 72.
