Click on a photo to increase its size King's Messengers The King's Messengers were a semi-religious, charitable organisation for children. Its purpose was for the children to learn about giving to missions and helping people in far away lands. It was organised by the Dyott family's governess, Miss Hodges, who cared for their children Mary and Eleanor at Freeford. Meetings took place in the village on St Giles church grounds, where the photograph in the centre of top row appears to have been taken. The girls group was called the Band of Friends; we therefore presume both groups are present on the photograph. Seated on the ground, second and third from the left in the photo: Edward Pass (clutching cap) who died of pneumonia shortly after this picture was taken; the younger boy sitting to his left, John 'Jack' Pass, who contracted polio and was disabled for the rest of his life (he died in 1942) The woman in the centre with the big hat must be Miss Hodges who ran both groups.
