WHITTINGTON is a compact and well-built village,
containing 799 inhabitants, and upwards of 3,000 acres of land,
chiefly belonging to J. Levettt, Esq. and Sir Robert Peel, Bart.; it is
pleasantly situated 3 miles east of Lichfield, and 4 north-west of Tamworth
in the North Hundred of Offlow, and Lichfield Union. The Heath, consisting of 338 acres, on the south-east
side of the village, is an open sheep walk, where the Lichfield races are
held. The Marquis of Anglesey is lord of the manor. The church is a neat square brick building with stone tower and lofty spire, and
the latter are of more ancient erection. The living is a perpetual curacy,
in the patronage of John Levett, Esq., value about £230; and the incumbent
is the Rev. Charles Floyer, M.A. There is a Free school with small
endowment, founded by Mrs Neach (editor's note: this is a misprint of Neal) in 1741. Whittington Hall, a large antique
mansion, a little north of the church, is occupied by John Baggaley, Esq.
The Post Office is in the centre of the parish.
HUDDLESFORD, a hamlet, 1 mile north of the
village is included in this parish.
HURST is a hamlet with two farms.
TAMHORN is an extra-parochial place, with 5
